Bix Beiderbecke
Singin' The Blues

Compil. DE 1985 on Big Band Era label
Jazz

Born was Leon B. Beiderbecke on March 10, 1903 in Davenport, Iowa. He was the finest lyrical instrumentalist jazz has ever produced. No one in Jazz before or since has ever sounded quite like him. About a third of his recordings he made were with small groups. In most of the others he was one musician among many, often paling the third or fourth trumpet part in a bind that sometimes totaled around 30 men. Even in these recordings the Beiderbecke cornet emerges through layers of arrangement. Bix died August 6, 1931. Louis Armstrong said: "Every Note he blew was so beautiful. I like that "Singing' theBllues" record and things like that. Nobody else could blow that like he did. I never did play that tune because of Bix. I didn't want nobody mess with it. Tell the whole world there'll never be another Bix Beiderbecke. He was a born genius, but they crowded him too much with love".
